What Does an E-Collar Actually Feel Like?

The most misunderstood tool in dog training. Here is what a modern E-Collar actually feels like, what it is not, and why "shock collar" is the wrong word for it.

Almost every conversation we have about E-Collars starts the same way. Someone says the words "shock collar", and you can watch them wince.

That reaction is fair enough. It is built on decades of genuinely bad equipment used by people who did not know what they were doing. But the tool we use today has very little in common with the thing most people are picturing.

So let us take the mystery out of it.

It is not a shock collar

A modern E-Collar produces the same kind of sensation as a TENS machine, the physiotherapy unit used on human muscles after an injury. At the levels we work at, it is barely a tickle. Most dogs respond to their first introduction by flicking an ear or turning their head, the same way they would if you tapped them on the shoulder.

Before we put one on your dog, we put it on you. On your hand, on your neck, at the exact level your dog will be working at. Nobody on our programme has to take our word for what it feels like.

Conditioning, not punishment

This is the part that gets skipped by everyone who gives E-Collars a bad name. We spend weeks teaching your dog what the sensation means before it is ever used to influence a behaviour. It becomes a tap on the shoulder at fifty metres, not a telling off.

By the time the collar is doing any real work, your dog already understands it, already knows how to switch it off, and is not remotely worried about it. If your dog looks anxious, we have gone wrong, and we go back a step.

Used by people who cannot afford to get it wrong

Search-and-rescue teams, gundog handlers and service dog trainers all use E-Collars. These are people whose dogs work at distance, off lead, in environments where a missed recall has real consequences. They did not arrive at this tool by accident.

Where we stand on the law

Worth being straight with you. Using an electronic collar on a dog is an offence in Wales, and a ban in England has been proposed, shelved and revisited more than once. We train in Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Frome and across west Wiltshire, where it is currently legal. If that changes, we will change with it and you will hear it from us first.

The bit that actually matters

The collar is not the training. The training is the training. A collar in the hands of someone who has not done the groundwork is just a fast way to confuse a dog.

What the tool gives us is clear communication at distance, and that is what buys your dog genuine off-lead freedom without you spending every walk holding your breath.

See it before you commit

Every dog we work with starts with a free consult. We will show you the equipment, put it on you, and walk you through the whole process. If you are not one hundred per cent comfortable, we do not proceed. No pressure, no hard sell.
